For obvious reasons, we’re not really big believers in optimizing Engadget for individual devices or platforms. Despite the unrelenting number of requests for an iPhone-optimized version of Engadget, we thought we’d let Apple stand by its whole “the real internet in your pocket” thing. And then we ran the numbers. We could hardly believe it.

So far in 2008, the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPod touch account for some 95.8% of all mobile views on the full site. We’re not even kidding. That doesn’t factor the visitors who hit our current mobile version of the site, but it’s pretty hard to argue with any number like that, so we’re rolling out a new beta version of Engadget optimized for the iPhone at i.engadget.com. (Don’t worry, we’ll still be keeping original mobile site active at m.engadget.com.) Please feel free to let us know what you think in comments!

Steve Jobs, presumably speaking from a hyperbaric chamber where he’s being nourished with an infusion of liquefied developers-souls before his next public appearance, had a few interesting tidbits about the AppStore for the Wall Street Journal this morning. Namely, users have downloaded some 60 million programs for the iPhone representing sales of about $30 million since the launch last month — a 30/70 revenue split between Apple and developers, respectively. “The thing’s going to crest a half billion soon,” Jobs added, “I’ve never seen anything like this in my career for software.” He went on to say that phone differentiation is no longer about radios and antennas (or uh, battery life) but about software. Steve also confirmed the controversial iPhone application kill switch in the event that Apple inadvertently approves a malicious program for distribution. Jobs said, “hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull.” As to the $999.99 I Am Rich application, the dubious download that displayed nothing but a glowing red gem, pulling that from the store was a “judgment” call. Sure, but that doesn’t explain how it made it through the vetting process to begin with.

Apple’s experimented with allowing iTunes to stream over the internet as well as your LAN in the past and quickly removed the feature (probably due to RIAA pressure), so we’re not placing too much stock in this, but AppleInsider’s unearthed a patent that seems to describe a way to stream music over the ‘net to your iPhone / iPod touch. The goal is to prevent you from having to selectively sync content to your device — instead, you’d sync just the metadata and stream whatever you wanted direct from your machine as though it was all stored locally. There are some obvious problems here — it wouldn’t work if you didn’t have service (or over EDGE, really), most home upstream connections aren’t that fast, etc., etc., — but it’s certainly interesting, and a welcome addition to local storage if it ever makes the scene. In the meantime, how about working in some of those new UI elements from the Remote app into the iPod app?

Conspiracy theorists and Mac rumor-mongerers, start your engines. According to an internal O2 memo we’ve received, stock of both the 8GB iPod touch and iPhone have run their courses, and have been EOL’d (at least in the UK). The brief letter sent out yesterday evening states that, “Due to the highly successful sales of the Apple 8GB I-Phone [sic], supply chain have today run out of stock & will not be replenishing stock of this product as it has now gone to end of life.” Whether this is due to the recent price cuts, the rumored upcoming 2nd generation iPhone, or just a sign that Apple is moving towards higher capacity devices is anyone’s guess. All we know is that soon the 8GB iPhone — at least in the UK — will become as rare and precious as the Pygmy Three-toed Sloth.

Stuff.tv is kicking back in Nike’s HQ at the moment and claims to have official word about Nike’s future plans with Apple. They say that the Nike+ system will “definitely” extend beyond the iPod nano to support the relatively bulky iPhone and iPod touch. Interestingly, it will leap-frog the proprietary RF link between the shoe module and nano adapter to take advantage of WiFi and eventually 3G. This of course leads to all kinds of speculation with regard to Apple’s “lifestyle companion” patent we showed you last month. 3G support would presumably allow for real-time coaching and uploads of your training activity through the Nike Plus website. So let’s see… cellphone (check), iPod (check), Internet device (check), handheld gaming (almost), and now a Nike lifestyle companion (could be).

Knowing how rampant the Apple rumor community can get, we try not to stir the pot too feverishly, but iLounge has made a bizarre little discovery that we thought you might like to see. Apparently, it’s already possible for iPhone / iPod touch developers to create pages in iTunes offering content to limited groups of users. While perusing these pages, they apparently stumbled upon the Education First Educational Tours page, where international travel tour registrants can download TourCast audio and video content. Strangely, an odd, almost Zune-like device can be seen in the corner of the graphic for this page bearing the Apple logo. Could this be some wild slip? Is what we’re looking at a rendering of a new iPhone or touch device, or is this some random mockup meant to suggest a “general” Apple product? We’re strongly, strongly leaning towards the latter, though maybe Jobs let one slide through the cracks this time. See the full view after the break.

StyleTap, the folks behind the CrossPlatform Palm emulator for Windows Mobile have built a proof of concept version of the software for the iPhone / iPod touch. They’re not committing to releasing any such product, and aren’t releasing the software as a beta or anything like that at the moment, but the video demo of the software in action is certainly promising. All the apps are rather responsive, the device benchmarks a good bit faster than the Tungsten | T, and Apple’s keyboard is even integrated into the proceedings quite nicely. Back in our day we had to use these things called “laptops” to make music, but now it seems like any kid off the street can rock out with a jailbroken iPhone and some Red Bull. Put two of these ADD-addled youngsters together with a DS Phat-toting friend and you’ve got New York avant-garde out the wazoo. We hear Matthew Barney is designing the iconic cover art as we speak. Although the MacBook Air’s multitouch trackpad is pretty nifty, it looks like Apple has even grander plans in store — a recent patent filing describes the MBA’s current features as “Basic Multitouch” and contains descriptions of “Advanced” touch operations like system control, file management and browser navigation. While the filing details using a combination of the thumb and two fingers to cut, copy and paste — something that seems awfully relevant to that little iPhone thing Apple sells — what we’re most intrigued by is the description of the “side pinky swipe” to control system functions like volume and screen brightness. Since the side of the pinky produces a different shape than your fingertip on the touch sensor, the system can automatically recognize it, making it ideal for quick adjustments — we’re already dreaming up lists of macros to trigger. Of course, there’s no telling if and when we’ll ever see this stuff in a product, but it’s probably not a coincidence the iPhone, iPod touch, and MacBook Air all use the same Broadcom touch controller — let’s hope those long-awaited new MacBook Pros join the club, eh?

This one’s still just a bunch of whispers and coincidences, but we’ve been hearing that Apple may lower prices on the iPhone and iPod touch in the next few months and drop the 8GB touch. Word is that falling flash prices coupled with the desire to introduce the 3G iPhone at an attractive price point will lead to the 16GB iPhone falling to $399, along with similar touch price drops: 16GB for $299 and 32GB for $399. It’s not clear what’ll happen to the 8GB iPhone, but everyone seems to agree that the 8GB touch is on the way out — we actually think a $199 8GB touch would fly off shelves, but that’s probably cutting margins razor-thin. We’ll see when we see — and if flash prices are really falling that fast, it’ll be interesting to see what happens to iPod nano pricing as well.
